WHALES, WOOL, WIRE & WASHI

September 5 – 23, 2018

The matriarchal orcas glide by my window.
The ocean heaves: crescendo, diminuendo; pure energy in motion.

Since studying ballet as a child, I have always been interested in the physical manifestation of music, including the pauses between notes: the unseen and the inaudible. Now that I live by the ocean on the small rural island of Gabriola in BC, I have been drawn increasingly into the music of nature. The dance of the tides, shapes lifting briefly from the waves, telltale spouts of water-infused air. The energy that goes into this work is what I feel as I watch and take all this in. Playing with wool, felt, Washi and wire, I have worked the tides of my shifting moods against the (felt) tidal lines rising and falling along the shore. The work is about building… building texture, building layers and building stories.
