Traces of Memory

June 1 – 25, 2017

“It is in one’s soul that one must find the true landscapes” (Maurice Denis, French Artist)

I paint places that I know and understand very well. I have a sense of belonging in this land, and feel unencumbered by minutiae. I use memory and lived experiences to bolster compositions. Nature is treated semi abstractly to suggest different locales, times of day and varying seasons. Sometimes an element of fantasy comes through in an imaginary colour scheme, unusual shapes, or in the perspective.

Intense light translates into sharp contrasts and vibrant colours. Rhythmic lines, textured surfaces, dark-light passages are all part of Nature’s handwriting. They stand out as design features of the vast desert or agrarian landscape. My palette is unabashedly brilliant, often full spectrum, as I convey the allure of this enchanted land.

My paintings are not intended to be specific places. They are painted poems or wanderings. Although these are unpeopled landscapes, there is always a feeling that people inhabit this land. You, the viewer, become part of the painting. The composite elements in each painting are meant to transport the viewer to a place of imagining that only he or she knows.
