Vera Dernovsek

Mythologica

June 28 – August 5, 2018

VERA DERNOVSEK paints in oils on canvas and in watercolors on paper. Sizes vary from few square inches to several square feet. The paintings sing with colour. They have explosive energy, yet contain subtle lyricism. Often they are representational- still-lives, portraits, nature paintings- sometimes they soar to abstraction. she says: “Although I have lived on the North American continent for nearly forty years, I have a European sensibility. And the truth is, my work is deeply embedded in my family tradition. My Austrian maternal grandfather, Albert Paris von Gutersloh, who was an influential figure for the Fantastic School of Vienna, and my mother, Alexandra Budlovsky, more modestly, but with great personal style, depth and flair, gave the groundwork to my own artistry. I am deeply indebted to them.”

Originally from the Czech Republic she now lives on a farm in rural Ontario, in a region that is renowned for natural beauty. Before settling in Canada, DERNOVSEK lived in Houston, Texas where she completed her doctoral studies at Rice University. She has returned to art from the academia without regret.
