woven notes: sketching with colour
September 29 – October 30, 2016
Colour sketches start as ideas that flow quickly from mind to hand to paper. They go through a number of iterations and modifications, both to refine the composition and to conform to the language of weaving. From this slow-paced process, these colour sketches emerge reconstructed as woven notes.
This exhibition explores different ways to express abstract art in textile form. Each technique (multilayered weaving; paper weft weavings; printing on weavings) has its challenges and qualities that result in unique works.
The pieces in this exhibition draw attention to the notion that weaving transforms the abstract into a more accessible visual experience, as cloth is so much a part of human life. Woven notes are, in the end, a visual and tactile distillate of colour sketches, of ideas of how to compose with colour.
